YOGMED Branding
Project Description
The purpose here was to complete an advanced project for your design portfolio and document the process of development. You will research a social cause, identify a problem related to it, and propose a solution through design.
My Social Cause
I researched the school-to-prison pipeline for this project, and decided to create an after school yoga and meditation program for middle school children.
What is the school-
to-prison pipeline?
“The disproportionate tendency of minors from disadvantaged backgrounds to become incarcerated, because of increasingly harsh school and municipal policies.”
“Students with trauma resulting from experiences like substance abuse, murder or accidental death in the family creates self-helplessness in these students and affects their development in all aspects.
“Suspension is linked with lower ratings for overall school climate, lower academic performance among students, lower school-wide academic performance, and an increased likelihood of school dropout.”
“Out-of-school suspensions, expulsions, and school-based arrests are increasingly used to deal with student misbehavior, especially for minor incidents.”
- The Advancement Project
How might we create a school program where school personnel can understand and respond to students who are traumatized, alienated, and in need of support?
How will yoga help?
According to Psychology Today,
Students participating in yoga develop a strong connection to body awareness and movement. The poses help improve coordinate, balance, strength, and flexibility.
Studies have shown that yoga can help build a sense of optimism. Yoga can build a sense of hopefulness for the future.
Yoga that is taught with mindfulness has significant advantages over traditional physical activity. Yoga has been found to reduce impulsivity, increase patience, and improve the ability to regulate attention.
Ideation
I began by creating the logo and working with different color schemes. In this stage, I created the name for the program, YOGMED, which is short for Yoga and Meditation.
After I had my general primary and secondary colors narrowed down, I began figuring out what the personality of my program would be. I wanted to cater to my audience of middle school kids and make sure my design was not too childish or too mature.

App Design
Once I created the branding assets for YOGMED, I decided to design an app as well. The app allows for students to learn yoga and meditation with in-depth descriptions for each pose or practice. Students would also be able to log their daily emotions and take notes, as well as connect with other students in their class.
